Why does a gas engineer need public liability insurance?

As a gas engineer, you need to think about many things when ensuring your business is set up properly. One of those considerations is getting adequate business insurance.

In this video, part of our Public Liability FAQ series, we answer the question ‘Why does a gas engineer need public liability insurance?’.

What is public liability insurance?

It protects you and your business in the event you are sued by a customer or a member of the public for damage or injury caused by something your business has (or has not) done.

In these circumstances, your business may be ordered to pay compensation, damages, and legal fees. Your insurance will cover these costs.

Must I have public liability insurance?

There is no law that requires you to have public liability insurance. However, you may find that many clients, particularly larger businesses and public sector organisations, might require you to have it before they agree to work with you.

Will my professional body require me to have public liability insurance?

You may also find that many trade associations and professional bodies will not let you join without public liability insurance. Being denied membership can have a negative effect on your professional reputation.

But do I really need public liability insurance?

If you meet members of the public or customers in your line of work, it is important to consider public liability insurance. Accidents can happen. When they do, the consequences can be very serious.

If something you have done causes injury to someone else, you may have to pay for their time off work, their hospital expenses, any specialist equipment needed for rehab, their legal fees, and compensation for any injury.

These costs can amount to hundreds of thousands of pounds. If you or your business cannot pay, your business and your assets may be at risk.

In addition, if you are uninsured, you may have to represent yourself in court. This can be difficult, stressful, and time consuming.

Do sole traders need public liability insurance?

You should consider being insured, irrespective of how your business is structured.
